BOYS LACROSSE IS UNDERWAY
Amended and correct edition, 9/5/05
By Michael A. Brown
Lacrosse is one of those sports everyone has heard of but knows little about. Then you see some Westlake guys and girls toting sticks with nets. You see them practicing after the soccer or football players leave the field. You catch a few minutes of the college championship game on TV. You find yourself thinking, “lacrosse looks really cool!”
Then we gotcha! Welcome to the fastest-growing high school sport in Texas.
Indeed, Westlake expects 55-60 boys to participate on this year’s JV and varsity squads. There is no separate freshman team. The head coach is Dave Lapin.
Westlake Lacrosse operates as a club sport, which means the teams can play in non-UIL games such as the Cy-Fair Tournament, Nov. 17-18 at Houston. To prepare, Westlake’s boys already practice twice a week at Westridge MS. Come watch! Regular season practice will begin soon into the new year.
The annual lacrosse money-raising activities are underway also. The teams invite all Chaps Connections readers to the annual all-day lacrosse car wash, Saturday October 28 at Valley View elementary. Get your car or truck sparkling clean for only $10. Players are currently selling tickets. In addition, business owners and entrepreneurs are encouraged to sponsor Westlake Lacrosse and thereby earn mention and\or an ad in the game programs and on stadium banners.
